Presentation of the SHE

The Service Handicap Étudiants (SHE), meaning the Disabled Students Department has existed since 2009 and has been identified under different names.

In 2019, the SHE is attached to the new “Formation et Réussite Étudiante” (FRE) meaning Education and Student Success pole.

The Student Disability Service is currently composed of :

  • 4 support officers
  • 2 project managers
  • 1 service coordinator
  • 1 administrative and financial assistant
  • 1 student disability officer

Important! A distinction has been made between support for students with disabilities and support for the institution’s staff with disabilities.

For the University’s staff, the Service Accompagnement à la Vie des Personnels (SAViP), under the direction of the HRD, provides support.

 To contact them: handicap-personnel@univ-poitiers.fr or by telephone on 05 49 45 33 65

The SHE's missions

Supporting students with disabilities

The purpose of the Disabled Students Department is to inform, guide and support students with disabilities at the University of Poitiers, throughout their university career.

To do this, the support officers offer individualised support, taking into account the student’s overall situation. Each student is received in an individual interview to discuss their difficulties and an analysis of their needs is carried out within the framework of their studies in order to establish a PAEH (Plan d’Accompagnement d’Étudiant Handicapé, meaning Disabled Student Support Plan). The interview also covers the social and daily life of the person if they so wish (professional project, accommodation, transport, catering, leisure activities, etc.), which enables the staff to inform and direct the student towards other services/associations/organisations within the university or outside.

The support officers coordinate the implementation of study and examination arrangements, which are decided in conjunction with the disability correspondents in each component, the schooling service and the heads of courses and programmes.

They are also available to answer questions from the teaching staff and bring their skills and knowledge about disabilities. In order to improve the support and inclusion of students with disabilities, they participate in the production of various resources for the university community and also initiate information meetings on disability.

They regularly train on the issue of disability, in order to offer quality support.

SHE projects

The disability service also aims to raise awareness and communicate on the issue of disability and inclusion. Thus, it participates in the development of awareness-raising actions and events around disability with the different actors to improve the support of students with disabilities, particularly with the teaching teams but also with other students of the University of Poitiers.

The SHE also develops projects related to the theme of disability and inclusion.

The Campus Explorer game is an online game to go on an adventure on the campus of the University of Poitiers.

It is a serious game that allows secondary school and new students to virtually discover the campus of Poitiers.

Play Campus Explorer

The aim of this game is to facilitate access to higher education for people with special needs (disabled, international students, etc.) in the context of an inclusive university.

The aim of the game is to find the founding document of the university stolen by the Circle, a secret society, while discovering the Poitiers campus and the various departments through riddles and puzzles

The University of Poitiers has been committed for two years to a project for the inclusion of autistic students, a project called “Building an Aspie-Friendly University”.

Today, higher education is committed, on a national scale, to the inclusion of people with autism, often referred to as Aspies in popular culture and as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in academic literature. Their intellectual wealth as well as their innovative strength is an asset to our universities and to our society.

This project started in 2018 and will last for 10 years.

The aim of the project is to eventually offer an individualised pathway to each student with autism. The aim is, according to their personal characteristics, to :

  • Build a transition project towards higher education
  • Define the pedagogical adaptations necessary for their success
  • Work on the way in which a student is supported beyond the sole educational framework
  • Prepare for social and professional integration

This pathway is built with the participation of the student (the main actor at the heart of the system), the local “Aspie-Friendly” team and the educational team of the training concerned.

Some of the resources offered:

The PHARES programme (Beyond Disability, Advancing and Succeeding in Higher Education) is a student tutoring scheme for disabled secondary school students.

It was initiated by ESSEC and MAIF in 2008.

The support is based on weekly and collective student tutoring for young people with disabilities who attend ordinary schools from the third to the final year of secondary school.

The tutors work in pairs with groups of 5 to 6 young people in fun and friendly workshops during which they develop their strengths and cross-cutting skills such as self-confidence, autonomy and the ability to organise their work.

This also allows them to discover the university environment, to remove prejudices and apprehensions, in order to encourage secondary school students to enrol in higher education.

The Phares workshops have existed in Poitiers for several years and are offered by the HandiSup association.

In 2020, the SHE organised the deployment of the programme on the Niort campus, in co-sponsorship with the HandiSup association.

For this deployment, a partnership was created with the IPHD master’s degree (Inclusion and Participation – Disability, Difficulties, Dependency), based at the Niort university centre.

Throughout the year, the disability department takes part in awareness-raising or information events on the issue of disability.

Some examples:

Les Rencontres Accès Libre (Open Access Meetings): the actors of accessibility in the Niort area meet to live and act together and offer everyone exchanges and events around disability, difficulties and dependence.

“Les Accessifs” Festival: proposed by the city of Poitiers, the festival takes place every two years. It is a week of activities for all around disability (shows, workshops, sports practices and meetings, exhibitions and conferences). This festival offers opportunities to bring together all publics, young people, adults or seniors, disabled or able-bodied. This contributes to “fight against clichés and stereotypes by showing what we can do together“.

Presence with a stand during the Open House Day, student fairs, etc.

Participation in actions within the University of Poitiers:

  • Health & Safety days at the Poitiers IUT: participation of the SHE in these days. Awareness-raising of approximately 400 new students
  • Disability Week in Literature and Languages
  • Support to M1 IPHD students for the organisation of an awareness day on invisible disabilities at the Niort campus for secondary school students
  • Raising awareness of HandiSport in FSS
  • Participation in the robotics exhibition to present the telepresence robot at the Science BU
  • Information meetings within the components on the functioning and missions of the SHE
  • Co-animation of a training on inclusive pedagogy organised by the Pédagolab
